HIDDEN SPRINGS BIKE PARK

The Hidden Springs Bike Park is a dedicated 1-acre space south of Cougar Field where Hidden Springs residents and their guests can ride bicycles. The park is open from sunrise to sunset year-round, although it is mostly un-rideable in the Winter and early Spring due to snow and muddy conditions. PLEASE avoid the park when it is muddy. Riding and walking in the park when it is muddy creates ruts and damage that volunteers must fix. Thank you.

History

The idea for the park was hatched in the Summer of 2015 by a group of boys in the neighborhood who had gotten in trouble for building a dirt jump in the Landslide Meadow open space. The boys took it upon themselves to start a petition to designate a spot in the neighborhood where kids could ride bikes and build dirt jumps. Over the course of several weeks, over 250 residents added their names, addresses and signatures to the petition, indicating their support. The idea went before the Hidden Springs Open Space Committee and Town Council and was vetted through Hidden Springs’ Policy 500 process. On February 9th, 2016, after the completion of the vetting process, the Town Council voted to approve that the bike park be allowed to move forward on a probationary basis.

A fund-raising campaign was kicked-off, and, within a month, 28 families and individuals donated nearly $4,500. The first load of dirt was delivered to the site on May 10th, 2016, courtesy of Seidl Home Company, excavated from a new home site across from the Village Green near the former site of the Snoqueen shaved ice stand. Lee Ross, a local grading and excavation pro, volunteered his time and equipment to haul in dirt, build the roadbed that provides access to the park, and construct the start mound. The first phase of construction of the riding features took place over Memorial Day weekend, 2016. A small group of volunteers, including Trail Builder Rob “Huck” Hollerman from the City of Eagle, refined the start mound, built the pump track and began working on the jump lines.

The second major phase of construction took place on July 16th, 2016. The jump lines were completed, a picnic table and trash can were put on site and the non-riding surfaces were seeded with grass.  In August, 2016, two water spigots were installed at the bike park and trees were planted to beautify and eventually provide shade. The trees were planted by two neighborhood kids, McKai Riff and Caleb Pentzer.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony took place on October 23rd, 2016.  Roughly 50 community members showed up to volunteer and celebrate.  Hidden Springs Town Manager, Lisa Ahrens, did the official ribbon cutting on the start mound.

Volunteers revamped the bike park in 2021/2022. The start mound was made larger and now has a 3-tiered design. The jump lines were scrapped and rebuilt and the pump track was refined. The park was also seeded with native grasses and wildflowers thanks to Hidden Springs resident, Dan Anderson. As of Spring, 2023, the bike park has a pump track and three jump lines, with plans to potentially add more in the future.

How to Get Involved

The bike park is an on-going work-in-progress and there is room to add more features and jump lines within its footprint. Scheduled volunteer days are organized by the Bike Park Committee (a sub-committee of the Open Space Committee) and typically happen twice a year (Spring and Fall) and are posted on social media, on signs at the bike park and in the mailroom. If you would like to get involved as a volunteer or make a donation to the cause (i.e., for tools, supplies and possibly a storage shed), please contact Kim Lyons (Bike Park Committee Chair) at 831-262-0612 or send an email to hsbikeareacommittee@gmail.com. The Bike Park Committee is always looking for help with things like maintenance of the features/ride lines, grass mowing, weeding, weed-eating and watering.

Thank you and RIDE ON!!!
